Quilted

So this past weekend was the surprise shower for my friend Beth and I think it's safe to say she liked the quilt I made. Yay! I did not get a great picture of her with it, I was seated near her so I could watch her open her stuff and was trying to keep an eye on my daughter who was distracting the grandma who threw the shower. But that's okay! I hope to see a picture of baby Gage on it one day, that's the keeper picture for me.

I made the quick trip to Maryland on Friday and came back on Sunday. Of course it was snowing all of sudden on Friday morning when I left, which was stressful. But it only lasted partially through Ohio and was clear the rest of the way. Which is a lot better than the downpour of rain I drove through the entire way the last time I went to Maryland. Sunday was the same, clear all the way to Cleveland and then obviously fresh snow in a semi-blizzard.

And on Sunday night I realized that, although I'd been saying "see you in a month" to all of my friends back in Maryland... the next shower is actually 3 weeks away. Which means I need to get on the ball with this next quilt!!

I want to post progress pictures SO BADLY, but my friend reads this blog so I can't. Suffice it to say I'm both excited by how it is turning out and also full of anxiety because I've never done anything like this before. Chris, as per usual, likes it but I keep thinking it looks wonky. But I will press on because I'm sure it's just jitters.

Because of the nature of this quilt I do have to learn a new technique, though. Applique. I have never appliqued anything in my life, which is not really surprising since I've only owned a sewing machine for 4 years and been really sewing for 3. Today I went out and got the stabilizer and the fusible adhesive. I also got a lot of tips from the old lady at the fabric counter, some of which I'd already planned to do and one of which I only half grasped. I will definitely be reading and watching lots of tutorials and doing some practice sewing (no satin stitch on my machine means experimenting with the zig-zag) before I commence with this. I would HATE to screw it up after the hours I've already put into the facing.

  1. I'm sorry. But I need my Audrey fix! You could always post the quilt photos on a link and I can resist the urge to peak.
Miss you already! And Dude, it was over 60 degrees today.

  4. Applique scares me, even more than my irrational fear of adding zippers. Do you have a lot to do? If not, can you hand applique it? If that's not possible, just lock yourself with your sewing machine in a kid-free room and go very, very, very slow. Not exactly helpful, I know. But I think you'll have to be really focused on it to have it turn out.

Can't wait to see the pictures! You have such a great eye for color & design - I bet it will be to die for.
